As of the 1st of April 2016 a new Road Taxation system will be introduced on the Belgian road network for all motor vehicles over 3.5 tons using the Belgian national road networks. By implementing this road tax, the Belgian regional governments are trying to encourage the reduction and optimisation of road usage by trucks, while at the same time generating revenue to finance better road infrastructures. The Belgian road tax will be introduced simultaneously in all 3 regions of Belgium: – In the Brussels region, on the entire road network (motorways, regional and local roads and streets) – In Flanders, on the Eurovignette network (except for Ports areas and motorways accessing the Ports) – In Wallonia, on the majority of motorways and regional roads.
In general, the Belgian government is free to decide which roads to toll, meaning we may see even more stretches of road begin tolled in the future than the highways and major roads currently covered by the compulsory Vignette motorway tax.
Detailed information about the road network subject to tolls has yet to be made public but we and our TENESO Belgium partner will endeavour to keep you informed every step of the way
