It was a cold but clear Saturday morning when Andy Penfold, one of Bishopsgate’s Customer Service’s team, drove the Bishopsgate people carrier to collect Nick and Tim along with their bikes and kit. Having rendezvoused at 6 AM they drove to Kempton Race Course in London for the 0730 hrs start of the British Heart Foundation London to Reading cycle ride in aid of The BHF Charity.
Nick and I got ourselves organised, checked tyre pressures and we agreed with Andy the meeting place in Reading after the ride. We departed promptly and decided to aim for an average 15 MPH for the 40 mile course on public roads. We felt this was a sensible pace especially as this was Nick’s first serious ride since that major operation. We decided to stop at each of the three organised rest stops not least to allow Nick to assess his progress and both to take on fluids.
We had a great ride with only two moments, the first when Tim Bloch caught the kerb on a busy road and summersaulted from the bike onto the pavement. Fortunately the bike was undamaged and Tim unharmed and after a 5 minute check over we were on our way again. The second incident was towards the end of the ride on the steepest section of the course climbing out of Henley on Thames when there was an incident involving a participant collapsing. An ambulance was called and all went well in the end but it did mean we were asked to walk up the hill rather than ride because of the congestion caused.
We achieved our aim of 15 MPH and you can see the picture of Nick crossing the finish line. After receiving our medal and eating some food we meet up with Andy who had been patiently waiting for us, finding time to go shopping for a children’s story book for his kids.
Nick and Tim would both like to thank everyone for their contributions and encourage anyone who may not yet have donated to do so. They are both preparing for the second of their three rides, The Cotswold ride on Sunday 12th May again in aid of the BHF.
