The Bishopsgate Crew are this year taking on a fresh new challenge in The New Year in aid of the children’s charity Action Medical Research.
Appealing to the more ‘all-rounder’ athlete, Bishopsgate have entered two teams of four to “Race the Sun” on the Isle of White in July. It sounded challenging…not least the waking up at 0500…so I asked the race organiser what did they have to do?
“This has been a very successful event for us and it has been very well supported in the past by both companies and individuals. Teams of four will be attempting to complete cycling, trekking and canoeing sections of the challenge starting at sunrise and aiming to finish by sunset – hence the headline racing the sun!
They will cycle approximately 44 miles, trek the Tennyson Trail (12 miles) and canoe a 1.5km course on the River Medina. From the start point in Newport, Isle of Wight there will be a staggered start for the first leg of cycling, which is approximately 25 miles. Then teams will head off on foot for a 12 mile trek along the Tennyson Trail” I would like to add here that while this may sounds very pleasant this is a hill with a very steep gradient and it just keeps going up and up and up. Its July so “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” really does come to mind.
She continues, “After retrieving their bikes, the teams will set off on a final 19 mile cycle to the River Medina. The final part of the challenge is a 1.5km course on the Medina; teams will use two Canadian canoes rafted together and race to the finish line”
It’ sounds like a great event and the funds raised by the challenge will again support the excellent work of children’s charity Action Medical Research. We will be following the team’s efforts and will give you regular updates as their training progresses. Please watch this space for more details.
