Following the disappointment a week earlier resulting in retirement from the Great Western Sportive with a tyre blow out, Patrick decided that his preparation for the Isle of Wight “Race the Sun” was missing this challenge.
Rather than accept the bad luck he was dealt, he got up really early on Sunday 25 June, not having had much sleep with his two young daughters up all night, and met Tim at the same venue as the previous week.
It was very different, no other competitors and no support crews but together, Tim and Patrick followed the same course and successfully completed the 50 mile sportive renowned for its climbs. Here’s a picture of Patrick summiting the Hackpen Hill reaching the White Horse and ridgeway at the top, after a very steep climb!
The day was cooler and the final few miles were ridden in rain. Patrick said “I’m really glad I have done it and it will help me mentally. Understanding the distance and knowing I can achieve it” Patrick added “although now I am wondering about the 12 mile hike in the middle of the cycle and I’m not even considering the canoe challenge!!”
