Women’s football is the fastest growing sport in the UK which could soon overtake netball as number one female sport
Growing attendance figures, groundbreaking broadcasting deals and a more equalitarian society have raised awareness at the top end of the sport, and participation amongst grassroots teams. In the last couple of years, attendance at women’s football matches has shot up. Fueled by a spectacular performance by England at the World Cup 2015 in Canada, interest in the national side has never looked stronger.
And what better way to reflect this popularity by comparing attendance figures at the woman’s FA Cup final. This year there was a crowd at Wembley of 35,000 people. In 2013 it was less than 5000!!!
Attitudes towards female participation are better than ever with the amount of girls and women playing football week-on-week rose by 29,900 to 1.84 million.
It is against this background that Bishopsgate wanted to get involved and offer their support. When Natalie who works in the shared service team at Gunnebo asked us to help we did not give it a second thought.
We asked Natalie a little about the background of the club she plays for, “Sporting Khalsa were formed in 1991 with the women’s and girls’ section being added in 2015, formed from FC Reedswood Ladies. FC Reedswood went from strength to strength since being promoted into the Women’s Premier League. The next step was to become bigger, better and attract more players, supporters and sponsorship to continue the growth of the club”
And The Manager told us, “Natalie joined the club during the 2014 season and helped the team remain in the Premier League. She spent the next few seasons nursing injuries and working hard to get fit. Last season Natalie played consistently with our development side who had a great season, reaching the final of the Staffordshire Women’s Challenge Cup. For her hard work and commitment Natalie was awarded Managers player of the season. The midfielder, now fully fit, has started strong with the first team in the new season, with aims of promotion into the Northern division”
Woman’s football sponsorship is a new venture for us but we are excited in being part of the ‘Khalsa experience’ We look forward to supporting the team and to see their results each week.
