Following a contract win in late 2008 Bishopsgate were fortunate enough to find an ideal warehouse facility in Royal Wootton Bassett. It wasn’t Royal then, but just around the corner from Swindon in Wiltshire.
Whilst I was rushing around the country trying to manage existing customers, deliver product to customers, and generally chase myself up blind alleys we employed an interim manager, Jez Warne, to help us set the site up. Jez’s duties included recruiting an initial team of four warehouse operatives and one warehouse administrator and some drivers many of whom remain today.
I recall Jez calling my mobile and telling me about Mandy who he just interviewed and ideal for the job but that she was hesitant to accept because there was no heating in the office, no furniture, an empty warehouse and only Jez who she only found by chance as she wondered around an empty warehouse. Jez said “Tim, I met Mandy, she is great but you will need to call her and outline the situation and allay her fears”.
After a brief conversation and Mandy’s’ fears were no more and I am really happy to say Mandy joined the Bishopsgate team. Mandy quickly became a really important and popular team member who has been instrumental in the growth of Bishopsgate especially in Swindon.
Mandy is pictured with Tina who was also interviewed by Jez and employed as a warehouse person. Tina progressed fantastically as a key member of the early warehouse team and is now responsible for the overall appearance and cleanliness of the Swindon site of which we are all really proud as well as responsibility for the recycling of all cardboard, wood, metal and waste packaging.
“Whilst this is so much a team effort over 10 years I am so proud of what Mandy and Tina have helped achieve at Bishopsgate in this site. I just can’t believe how 10 years have flown by and I am really proud to be able to thank them both and reinforce my appreciation of their work over the 10 years”.
And Mandy’s story. Actually much of what Tim has said is true. I had found myself in a nice little job in Swindon having just been made redundant from ELC. I could see all of the benefits working for Bishopsgate but was it really legitimate??? Tim’s call certainly gave me the reassurance that I needed. 10 years? It’s scary really but I really do love it here. If you cut me you would see blue Bishopsgate blood flowing through my veins? I have a laugh every day over something or somebody; even today we had to check out the CCTV to see who had taken the milk! My lips are sealed as to who hid the bottles. When I started there were only 3 of us in the office; now there is often more than two dozen milling around. I am also now the proud grandparent of two twin girls. The time has really just flown by.
I worked with Tina at ELC too and I said to Jez that Tina would be a good potential employee. Tina joined in the same week. And what did Tina think about her 10 years at Bishopsgate. “I have to agree with Mandy really. It’s just like working for one close knit big family. Everyone is so helpful and they just get on with things. It’s a great team to work with. Obviously the company has grown considerably from when I joined. My children have all grown up now with one working in Dubai as a teacher while the other works as a mental health nurse. The time has just flown by. I really do enjoy the job I’ve been doing”
