One of the world’s most popular standards for environmental management has been revised, with key improvements that make it fit for the future. Key improvements in the new version include:
- A greater commitment from leadership
- An increased alignment with strategic direction
- Greater protection for the environment, with a focus on proactive initiatives
- More effective communication, driven through a communications strategy
- Life-cycle thinking, considering each stage of a product or service, from development to end-of-life
“From managing our customer’s waste stream through to better scheduling of our vehicles, we understand that the work that we do can have a huge environmental impact” said managing director, Tim Bloch.
Debbie Goy, Bishopsgate’s quality manager adds, “I was pleased when this accreditation came through. Transitioning from an older version is never straightforward and required a shared vision and commitment from many people from Bishopsgate’s management, staff and crews. As a parent, I am particularly pleased that we have been able to show our commitment to the environment in this way. I think, too, that it has helped us to realise efficiencies within our own supply chain and improve performance” She adds, “We have fully embraced the idea of paperless workflows and recycling of metals, cardboard and plastic. Our move to paperless scanners 2.0 for our drivers, IT technology to reduce travel, and a complete move to electronic records management have all combined to make a huge impact. But the biggest by far has been the absolute success we have had in reducing fuel usage through the Driver Performance Bonus Scheme. The biggest environmental impact from operating our vehicles is fuel consumption and the resulting emissions, so to be making the reductions in the amount we are is a huge achievement”
The ISO 14001 – 2015 accreditation, which is the very latest version Ed, confirms Bishopsgate’s serious dedication to environmental issues with the services they provide their customers, and within their own workplace.
